The Ending of “Kinsey”

Stephen Colbert had Michael Sheen on tonight talking about his show Masters of Sex, about a sex researcher who followed Kinsey, and that reminded me of the movie Kinsey.

As I recall, at the end of the movie Kinsey, we see Kinsey walking in the woods, and he walks into a little clearing, and he stands there, and then a couple of cute animals walk out into the clearing and look at him. Well, I remember thinking at the time that lots of cute animals should come into the clearing, maybe two of each kind, and they look at Kinsey, and then all the animals start having sex in front of him. That would have wrapped the movie up nicely, don’t you think, based on what he was studying?

HashTragic

We all know those hashtag challenges on the Internet, like the #firechallenge, and all the tragic consequences they can have. So how about a Lifetime movie about some tragic hashtag challenge gone wrong, called: HashTragic, or: HashTragegy, or: Hashtrag?

(I think Lifetime specializes in making TV movies about pop-culture tragedy like this.)

Jack Links Hangry Moments Puma Ad

Now this is a fun idea: a college student is hungry in class, and a growling mountain lion head sticks out of his stomach through his sweater. Nice. And the girls think it’s cute.

I don’t know, I think it could have been handled better than here, like with the mountain lion head being more aggressive and eating stuff around him, like someone’s ponytail sitting in front of him, or something, and with the student apologizing for his growling tummy. But I love the growling mountain lion head representing hunger: great idea, guys! Fun, fun, fun.

Here’s the hangry mass marketing moment’s puma piece:

Actually, this is only one ad in a new campaign, with the others using an eagle and a wolf.

Truth #FinishIt Free Advertising Ad

This ad’s message is really quite good: people (especially celebrities) who post photos of themselves smoking cigarettes are serving as free ad spokespeople for Big Tobacco. The problem is, the ad is all snazzy and has lots of photos of attractive people looking cool while smoking, so this ad serves as an ad for Big Tobacco too, despite its anti-tobacco message.

Good idea: unintended outcome.

Maybe that’s the whole point, to show people that’s what they’re doing when they post smoking selfies. But then they’re just coming right out and admitting smoking looks cool by demonstrating it, and I thought they were trying to undermine the idea of smoking being cool. Plus, they’re helping the offending smoking selfies get out to a much larger audience who might never have seen them.

So maybe back to the old drawing board?

(Another possible problem here is that their hashtag, as one word, says: “shit” at the end.)

You’ll find this smokin’ ad at this website:

Cosmopolitan Sex Hashtag

Standing in line at the grocery store last night, I saw a Cosmopolitan magazine with a claim on the cover about tips to great sex, and underneath it said: “#HellYeah”. But “#HellYeah” could refer to anything, so why not use a hashtag that’s more sex-specific, like: “#TotallyWorthTheHerpes”, or: “#NewSexAddict”, or: “#NymphoNews”, or at least: “#SexStuff”? “#HellYeah” could be about a ZZ Top concert, a yummy fondue, a hamburger, a muscle car, or almost anything else people like, so shouldn’t they be more hash-topical?

Sophia Vergara’s Emmys Skit

I know some were offended by the objectification on display during Sophia Vergara’s Emmy’s skit where she stood as an objet d’art on a revolving platform, but she said she should be allowed to be hot and make fun of herself. I thought she was making fun of the scopophilia inherent in the televised objectification of female beauty, and I agree she should be able to do what she likes, even if it didn’t come across as intended for some. But after hearing her defiant explanation, I thought: “Wow, she really puts the ‘I can’ in ‘eye candy’!”*

* Phonetically, anyway…

(I didn’t see the skit, other than clips, but boy have I heard a lot about it on the news!)

The Fabulous Feathery Beak Brothers in: “Beaking Bad”

Wow, Breaking Bad won a pile of Emmys again, even though it wasn’t on this year. There’s got to be a way for bird sanctuaries to tap into this popularity for fundraising, right?

I think the people who don’t care about birds are just disappointed that they’re not involved in criminal activity. But with a new web series, they could be! All someone like The Audubon Society, or a nature preserve, would have to do is combine The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Breaking Bad into a bird-themed show: The Fabulous Feathery Beak Brothers in: Beaking Bad.

Yes, birds seem all pretty and innocent, singing every morning in their pretty feathers, but there’s a dark underbelly: they’re worm smugglers! Every day they go out while it’s still dark and they think no-one can see them, and they dig up worms, hide them in their beaks and stomachs, and then they feed them to their helpless chicks, addicting them to worms for life! Oh, the ornithology!

So bird groups: simply cultivate these naughty bird characters, and watch the interest roll in!
