SPDR Hedge Ad

In this spot for SPDR ETFs, we see a man plant bushes that form into a hedge, and then they grow over the years until the man’s getting gray hair and the hedge is about ten feet tall. Then we see a view up over the hedge, which now blocks what they’ve had to look at for years up to now: a large Victorian house painted a patchwork of loud colors. And we also see the man sitting in a chair outdoors staring at the hedge. Wow, if he wanted to stare at a hedge instead of that house, why didn’t he just turn his chair around and stare at the hedge surrounding his own house?

But wow, this guy sure took the long way to block the view of his neighbors’ hippy house. Why didn’t he just hire a landscaping company to plant tall hedges early on? Or maybe he’s really passive-aggressive, and he wanted his neighbors to see his plan working, little by little, over a period of years, to finally obscure their brightly-colored home from view. Wow, I’ll bet it really showed them, huh?

I guess the real message of this spot is that SPDR ETFs are a long-term planning solution to help you get to the nice, worry-free life you’ve always wanted. But they don’t say that; instead they say: “If there’s a precise way to do something, Spider ETF investors will find it.” But the precision displayed here takes so long to accomplish, and all the time he’s had to look at the ugly house. Why not just build a fence in the mean time: then he would have gotten the same result immediately. Or aren’t we supposed to think of that?

Here’s the garish blocker spot:

(Hmm, this advert brings new meaning to the term: “Hedge Fund”, doesn’t it?)
