GMC Ad Music

In their recent ads, GMC has been using the song: “Eminence Front”, by The Who. This is an odd song to use for any product, because what it’s about is saying people who use cocaine are hiding behind a false façade of eminence, and the song itself says: “Eminence front, it’s a put on.” So this music makes me think of something we cannot trust (like a politician, for example: in fact, I originally thought the song was about politics until I read Pete Townsend’s remarks about it), that wears a lying mask to trick us. I would never use this song for a product ad (unless referring to a competitor's misleading advertising), and it’s odd that others do. Maybe they’re hoping everyone else doesn’t read into the music what I do because they don’t know the song? But if that’s the case, then why bother using such expensive music from a top-tier band when you could have new music written for less?

So what this ad's music says to me is that the GMC trucks look strong, but that's just a cosmetic design trick; either that, or it says the ad message may seem slick, but it's dishonest. (That is solely from the music they are using. The ad would work way better with different music.)

Here’s one of these new ads using this song:

And this is about the song: “Eminence Front”:
