Sea World has been running a new ad campaign aimed at countering the negative publicity they’re received from animal rights groups, former employees, and documentaries such as Blackfish. In these new ads, they encourage us to ignore the rumors and find out “the truth”, which is, as it happens, according to them, on their very own website. (Wow, what do you know about that? Like an oil company.)
Well, I think these ads may not be the best defense. In fact, since we all know about the cruelty aspect at this point, why don’t they make an ad that doubles down, saying: “You’ve heard we keep Killer Whales in prison conditions. Well, it’s true. Do you know why? It’s because they’re killers! They even brag about it in their name: Killer Whale. So are we just supposed to allow them to get away with their crimes of murder? What message will that send to the other whales that obey the law?”
If they made an ad like that, surely the “tough on crime” crowd will rush to their defense.
Here’s an example of the new Sea World ad strategy:
(BTW: This is just a sketch comedy piece. Please don’t kill me animal rights activists!)
