How I Met Your Mother

One of my best friends works for the show How I Met Your Mother, and last week, someone we know was trying to ask what the show is about, not being a regular viewer. And it occurred to me that maybe not everyone even knows at this point. I think when the guys who created this show were coming up with it, they had no idea it would ever run for so long, or maybe they would have used a different conceit. (Someone telling kids a bedtime story for years on end isn’t the most believable scenario.) But apparently it’s very popular, and so maybe everyone else knows the set-up. But for those who don’t, here it is:

Some guy is putting his kids to bed, and they ask how he met their mother, and he starts telling them the story. (I think that’s right, anyway.) But this show has been on for so long, hasn’t this guy been telling his kids the story for years and years at this point? From what I understand, they have already shot the last part where the story is finished, and they find out the answer to the question posed by the show’s title. But just for fun, and for realism, in the last episode, I really hope that they show the kids as adults, and still wearing the same pajamas as in the first episode, ripping through them because they’re full-grown now (because they’ve been trapped listening to this guy tell the story non-stop for years and years). And he should have a ridiculously long beard and gray hair, so we’ll all be able to tell that this story has been told non-stop for years, just like the show indicates!

And then it could turn out that they’re not even his kids after all, and that he’s abducted them, and all so he could force them to listen to his crazy story about his fictitious wife, and so he could act like their “father”. And then at the end, he could put on a woman’s wig and then confirm the whole story, as his “wife”: the kids’ “mother”. And that way, they could shoot the whole series again from the beginning, but from “her” perspective, and they’d get like 8 more seasons at least out of it. That's what I'd do! (Oh, and they could threaten to kill the “kids” if the show ever gets canceled! Then it might run forever!)
