Here we have an anti-smoking ad where a bunch of sick people in the hospital or drab surroundings try to sing the famous song “Sugar, Sugar”, originally intended for The Monkees, but recorded instead by the fictional group The Archies. I think the message is that these sick people are ironically, sarcastically singing a love song to cigarettes, with the idea that they liked them, they’re addictive, and they were harmed by them. I’m not sure this works well for me, but if they’re going to go this route with using the song “Sugar, Sugar”, I think they really ought to end it by saying cigarettes may seem like sugar, but they’re really meshuga!
