I have read
reviews of this new Godzilla movie, and it’s about what I was afraid of:
too much drama from Hollywood stars, and other monsters. Let’s do that next
time, except without all the star drama. But for this one, which is supposed to
be a reboot, I think there’s only one plot line that would really work well,
and it’s this:
Humanity has
played around with some dangerous stuff, and we’ve been too big for our
britches, so we’ve got a can of whoop-ass heading our way. And so it comes, in
the form of Godzilla, but only after a few catastrophic events nobody can
define (because all news people are killed, and all satellite photos are too blurry
or whatever). But then he comes from the sea, Godzilla strikes, and he destroys
Tokyo, Singapore, Honolulu, Los Angeles, whatever you want. And we throw
everything we’ve got at him. Russia, the United States, China: we’re all
working together, and we throw it all at him, but nothing works. And then, just
when we’re writing our obituary, Godzilla just turns around and walks back into
the sea. Nobody knows why, but he just goes back. And the end is someone saying
we’d better get ready for him to come back, because he’s coming back someday.
Then, after that,
you can have all your global warming stuff, and your pollution story lines, and
your other monsters, and all that other stuff that Americans seem to think is
new but has been done to death in the Japanese Godzilla movie series.
But I don’t think I have ever seen it that Godzilla is just a force of nature,
and he just rampages, and nobody can do anything about it. And that’s why he’s
scary to begin with: because we can’t do anything, and he’s essentially a
punishment made by our own hands.
So I know it’s too
late, but wouldn’t it have been cooler to see this above story line, and then
seen this current movie next? I just think if the movie is intended as a
reboot, and if it’s called “Godzilla” it should be about Godzilla alone.
Otherwise, call it Godzilla Vs. (Whatever the current monsters are called).
See what I mean?
