A recent ad for a retirement plan uses the great song by The
Specials: “A Message to You, Rudy” and mutes the song until the end of the ad,
where they sing: “Time to think of the future.” This is a great song to use
because the people who are thinking about retirement right now are most likely
people who grew up on this song, listening to it in high school and dancing to
it at Ska parties in college.
But does this threaten people to save for retirement enough?
I say: “No!” In order to scare people into saving for retirement, we’re going
to have to bring out the big guns and have an ad where the announcer says: “If
you don’t save for retirement, there’ll be…” And then the Sex Pistols sing: “No
future! No future! No future for you! No future! No future for you…!” from
their great song: “God Save the Queen”. Now that
ought to get their attention.
