In this joke/proposed ad for Just for Men mustache &
beard dye, we see scenes from the movie Deliverance,
and the announcer says to look what happens to men without any facial hair: one
gets raped in the butt (Ned Beatty), another one is killed (Ronny Cox), and a
third gets his leg broken and is knocked unconscious and has to be rescued by
his friends (Burt Reynolds). The only one who stays macho the whole time is the
guy with the mustache: Jon Voight. And in fact, had Burt Reynolds had on his
signature mustache, surely he would
have been the super hero of the film! So the message is clear: grow a mustache,
or you’ll be less than heroic, and who knows what horrors will befall you
everywhere you go!
Then, as a tag, we see Jon Voight waking up from a
nightmare, like at the end of Deliverance,
and he reaches to feel his mustache, and he says: “No! Oh, thank God it’s still
there! I had this horrible nightmare where I lost my mustache!”
(I know this is off topic, but when is there going to be a Deliverance theme park ride? The ads
could scream: “Want to be a man? Live through the harrowing ordeals on the Deliverance ride! Don’t worry: we
promise not to tell what happened to you!”)
