Retiring Music from Figure Skating?
When a player is really great, sometimes their number is “retired”, like Michael Jordan’s number 23 at the Chicago Bulls. And likewise, I think maybe musical numbers that are overused in figure skating perhaps ought to be retired, like Romeo & Juliet, Carmen, and everything from Phantom of the Opera. Because after all, they have accomplished an amazing feat as well: they have made us sick of great music accompanying figure skating routines just a few too many times. And really, that’s a great accomplishment in itself, isn’t it? Maybe the skating shows could even hang the names of the retired musical numbers from flags around the skating arena to indicate their (thankfully permanent) place in history.
