Yep, it was bound to happen, wasn’t it? The rootin’ tootin’ shootin’ Republican Party of Pima, Arizona is sponsoring a fund-raising gun raffle of a Glock handgun! That’s the same brand of handgun in the same congressional district as Gabrielle Giffords was shot with/in. Um, I don’t think you can get much more bad-tasty than this, but I guess you could try. But why would you want to?
They probably didn’t mean to do it, but it’s just dumb and insensitive, and that’s what critics always accuse the Republican Party of being anyway, so it’s just confirming everyone’s stereotype of them when they do stuff like this. It’s just ill-advised. I mean, I know we have a Second Amendment and all, and that guns are legal and everything, but when a child dies in a fireworks accident, you don’t hold a fireworks spectacular show for a while afterwards. And when a monster truck runs a bunch or people over in your district, you don’t raffle one off, or sponsor a fundraising monster truck rally. It’s just common sense. I guess it’s things like this that explain the necessity of people like Frank Luntz to tell politicians what to do and say. But that’s more for stuff like how to word statements; they ought to know better than to do things like raffle off a Glock after a spree shooter uses a Glock to kill people in the same area. Duh.
The attached news story about this calls the event “tone deaf”. Maybe they’re deaf from all the noise of shooting guns all the time. But to use gun metaphors for how dumb this is of the Republican Party in Pima, Arizona, I’d say they went off half-cocked and shot themselves in the foot. (Not very smart.)
Here’s the shooting-mad story, blasting these bullet-heads for their idiocy and insensitivity:
