Okay, here we have an ad for the 2013 Mustang (and the Cobra too, apparently) where a Ford Mustang is driving around a series of city blocks, and as it does so, it makes a connection with people viewing it from the sidewalk, etc., and it changes colors and style and paint jobs to match the visual style of the person admiring the car. This is similar in look to that Infiniti ad where the cars keep on changing colors while they're parked and driving around, etc., except that whereas there's no real reason (other than vapid flash) for the cars in that Infiniti ad to be doing that, in this commercial, there is every reason for this to be happening! In this spot, we are seeing projected onto the car the wildest dreams of the people looking longingly at the muscle car on the road, and so the car takes on the personality, color-scheme, design sensibilities, etc., of the person admiring the car as it drives through the city, reflecting a bunch of classic design sensibilities and quite frankly killer color schemes as it shows us what each person wishes their dream Mustang or Cobra car had. And this, my friends, is a brilliant concept! And not only that, but it is so marvelously accomplished by the visual effects people, it just looks like a dream for Mustang fans! Some ads have a clever idea that make them fun to watch, and some ads have a cool visual look or flashy and cool visual effect that makes it fun to watch: this has both! And for me, this is one of the best car commercials ever on TV.
Other car companies can show their cars skidding out of control all over the place if they want to, but that just seems lame to me (because for one thing, it's really &$#@ing irresponsible to show that stuff: it makes people want to try it themselves, and it's ridiculously dangerous to do it, and it sets a horrible example! And for another thing, it's totally illegal to do that sort of thing with a car anywhere on the roads in America, so they're trying to lure us with forbidden and impossible scenarios, and that's both dishonest and reprehensible. Plus, it's really stupid!). But with a car like this new Mustang, and especially for the Cobra (and also for a car like the Dodge Challenger), all you have to do is show it to us in a normal, everyday situation, and it instantly leaps out at us as being badass, awesome, super-cool, etc., compared to everything else on the road (excepting perhaps Ferraris and Lamborghinis). But then when you show it in all the different fantasy paint jobs we'd all love to have, it becomes a work of art! You know how some people have posters of racing cars on their walls? This commercial is like the blockbuster action/effects movie of the summer for people like that who love muscle cars. And while I'll never own one of those cars, I have to admit to an absolute gear-head love and obsession for cars like these, especially when they are given the most beautiful paint jobs imaginable.
Quite simply put, this ad is eye candy for car-oholics! And just like with candy, even those who know they can't have any almost always love to look at and admire the candy! And so this commercial should be one of the all-time champs of car ads for almost everyone, and especially for those who love American muscle cars. And it's because these cars look like classic vintage cars as well as new beauties, shown in those classic paint jobs and designs, that it works so well: that's the beauty of these new muscle cars! (And that black Cobra at the end: that one's for me!) This ad, like this car, is an instant classic!
Here's the absolutely awesome and astonishingly amazing auto advertisement:
