Starbuck’s Helps Small Business (?)

Starbucks has just started running a new ad asking us all to donate money so they can help create jobs and help small businesses. That’s funny, because over the past ten years, didn’t they kill most all of the mom & pop coffee shops across the whole country? That kind of seems a little bit at odds with the whole helping small businesses thing. But maybe not: maybe they feel guilty about destroying so many small businesses and killing so many independent jobs over the years, so they just want to try to make it up to everyone. But probably not, since they’re still asking for us to pay for it. If they really wanted to make amends, they’d pay for it themselves; after all, they’re one of the biggest and most profitable corporations in the world, so they could afford to pay for it they wanted to. But they still want us to do it anyway, and then give them the money (!). Hmmm.

Thanks, Starbucks! But maybe if we just don’t buy your ridiculously expensive coffee anymore, we’ll be able to donate to a real charity. And maybe the corporate bully that has been Starbucks isn’t the best entity to be helping small businesses anyway. It just seems a little fishy, after all that’s happened. Like if NetFlix said they wanted to help mom & pop video stores...
