Yes, you might have noticed a sense of déjà vu lately if you’ve seen a new Allstate commercial with some hippie wrecking into a square businessman, and at the end, the hippie says: “It’s like we’re connected!” To which the square replies: “No we’re not!” (etc.) Um, this is very similar to the end of that Hanes ad with Michael Jordan (the one where he has the Hitler mustache) and that annoying guy who points out the other guy’s “bacon” collar, and then he says they’re “like twins”, to which Michael Jordan says: “No we’re not!” (Because the other guy doesn’t have a Hitler mustache? Maybe?)
Okay, so leaving aside the issue of the Hitler mustache, did you recognize anything similar in the ends of these commercials? Well, if you didn’t, it’s that they both end with losers saying they’re just like the other person in the ad, and then the other person denies it. So this begs the question: is this a rip-off, an “homage”, or are they both done by the same agency or creative guy? I just have to wonder…
I can’t find the Allstate spot (it’s currently running on network TV though), but here’s the Hanes ad:
