Jeep Grand Cherokee Black Ice Ad

Jeep has a new commercial for their Grand Cherokee saying that "black ice" is a big problem for cars, unless you have a Grand Cherokee (!). Then they show a driver in a Jeep Grand Cherokee approaching some black ice on a road at night, and so he switches his transmission switch to the black ice setting, or whatever he's doing, and he drives perfectly over the ice with no traction problems whatsoever, even around curves with regular tires on the car. Yay, Jeep: conqueror of black ice!

Or is this even an honest depiction of a black ice scenario? I don't think it is. You see, black ice is called "black ice" because you don't see it! This guy sees it and switches his transmission setting! This wouldn't ever happen if it's really black ice, so that's a false representation right there. Had they shown the guy listening to the weather report on the radio, and they warned of black ice on the roads, and then the guy switched his transmission setting, and just in time to avoid skidding and wrecking on a patch of black ice, then that might have been a good way of doing it without being misleading. But for him to see the black ice before he crosses it: I'm sorry, but that's just not believable. (Maybe it could happen once in awhile, but most of the time, you don't see black ice; and you do spin out and wreck on it, no matter what kind of car you're driving.)

Then, there's also the thing that this ad shows the Jeep driving perfectly along a completely ice covered hill with regular tires at the end of the spot. I don't care what kind of special transmission you've got, or even if you have 1,000-wheel-drive: if it's a heavy car, it will slide down that hill on the ice with regular rubber tires. This is especially reckless to suggest their car will never ever skid or slide on ice-covered streets: if people believe this, they will drive recklessly in these conditions, and people may be killed as a result. (I'll admit they might be correct that it helps to have a Jeep in these conditions, but I've seen a Greyhound bus do a 360-degree spinout on black ice, so I seriously doubt a Jeep will fare any better.) So come on: I know you want to sell your cars, but still... (Honesty is the best policy!)

Now, saying it helps is fine. But it seemed like they were saying you'll never have to worry about icy conditions ever again if you'll just buy their Jeep Grand Cherokee. And that's just irresponsible. Black ice is hazardous for an army tank, so don't act like it's no big deal.

I can't find this ad on the internet. Maybe that's so we can't make fun of it and call BS on them. But I saw it on TV anyway, so nyah!
