In this commercial we have a woman see a designer purse she
wants in a window across the street, and she does a series of death-defying
moves to get to the window so she can take a picture of it. And then they say
that if it’s on your mind, it’s on eBay. But can you upload a photo and have a
listing come up? If not, then this whole scenario is kind of useless. Couldn’t
she remember what it looked like, and then simply search eBay for it? Or is
that cheating?
But for me, there is one product that this ad would be
perfect for: a telephoto lens (or a digital camera that has one built in). You
see, if she could take the picture of the purse from where she is, she wouldn’t
have to do all the death-defying stunts to get the picture, right? And to drive
the point home, were this an ad for such a telephoto lens, we could see the
triumphant woman come back across the street and get run over by a cab, proving
that all the previous stunt work can get you killed. (And is a purse really
worth your life? I mean, I get that we’re a consumer culture, but seriously…)
