The new DirecTV ads are all about the voice recognition function that lets you tell the system what to do with voice commands. So then why not use Mr. Voice Commands himself: Captain Jean Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation? He was always making voice commands to the crew, the computer, the replicator, the holodeck, etc. And we could see him make a few of these commands, like: “Earl Grey Tea, hot.” and then say: “Oh, and DirecTV: Record Fringe.” Then the announcer could say that now you can use voice commands for your DirecTV, and since it’s the premier satellite television service, naturally the Enterprise from Star Trek gets it in space, which would seamlessly open the door for any space-related movie or TV show to be in a future DirecTV ad.
Then following ads could be from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Space 1999, Battlestar Galactica, etc. And each one could show the hardships of being in space, and the person in the ad, like Keir Dullea, saying something like: “Wow, it sure takes a long time to get to Jupiter! That’s why it’s so great to have DirecTV, so I can watch all my favorite shows while I’m traveling so far through the solar system. Plus, DirecTV lets me make voice commands, which is nice, now that HAL’s been shut down.” Or maybe Martin Landau could say: “Blowing the moon out of orbit with a nuclear waste explosion was awful, but thanks to DirecTV, we can record all our favorite shows to watch whenever we want to remember what Earth was like.” Or maybe even have a Cylon saying: “I may be a Cylon, but I still love watching human television shows and movies! That’s why DirecTV is so great! I wish we’d had it on our home planet, but they used all their technology in engineering us, so there was nobody left to make great entertainment. And that’s why we wanted to infiltrate the humans to begin with: so we could get DirecTV!”
