Casino Policy

I saw a report today about a new policy for drink servers at Resorts Casino. Supposedly the ladies who serve drinks there are being photographed in a skimpy outfit while holding a number and photographed from the neck down, then the pictures are sent over to a modeling agency for them to look at and decide who looks good enough to stay, and who doesn’t look attractive enough anymore. As a result of this, a number of women who have worked there for many years are being fired for being or looking too old, or for simply not looking appropriate in the new slinky uniform. The reason given for this policy is that the casino wants to have their drink server ladies dress in sexy little flapper dresses in an attempt to make the place feel like the HBO show Boardwalk Empire.

I’ve seen that show, and I like it a lot, but it seems to me that in their mad dash to replicate the sultrier aspects of the show, they’re missing out on a great opportunity to create a more realistic feel of the show Boardwalk Empire in person, as well as continue to employ these loyal older ladies. How can this be accomplished, you might ask? Well, it’s simple!

For anyone who has ever been to a casino, it’s immediately clear that while there is a definite need to attract a clientele and to attempt to lure said clientele into soaking themselves in alcoholic beverages to the point where they are more likely to engage in binge gambling with reckless abandon, there are also two other, equally important needs that are very closely related to the part about getting people drunk and suckering them into gambling. Um, I mean, plying them with cocktails and enticing them with the promise of winning untold wealth. *Ahem*. So, what else could you possibly need in a place designed to get people all liquored up and then steal all of their money? I mean, after all, aren’t intoxicated people always reasonable about everything, especially when they feel something might be unfair? (<Like when they’re pulled over by the police, for example.)

Okay, so there’s the problem of drunk people getting out of control at the gambling tables, or just perhaps overly rowdy and randy generally. And then there’s the other problem I referred to. And what might that be? Well, whenever there is gambling, there is the possibility that someone might actually win something for a change. In fact, it’s just possible that somebody, every once in a while, might be lucky enough to win a lot! So, how do you solve two problems as serious as these with one solution, and tie it into making the casino feel like the show Boardwalk Empire come to life, and do it in such a way as to allow these loyal long-time employee older women to keep their jobs at the casino? It’s simple, if you’ve seen the show.

For every young, slinky flapper dress-wearing, sexy drink-serving girl character partying it up on Boardwalk Empire, there is a corresponding older, long-conservative-dress-wearing, sign-toting Temperance-protester-lady character trying to shut them down and rain on their parade. What I propose is this: let the older ladies keep their jobs at the casino, and rather than dress them up in the slinky flapper dresses, dress them up in those ultra-conservative turn-of-the-century dresses and have them carry big signs protesting alcoholic drinks and gambling; then whenever somebody gets drunk and rambunctious or starts winning too much money, the Temperance movement ladies could come out and drive them out of the casino. It would work beautifully!

They should realize that all of the female employees, regardless of age and looks, can play an equally vital role in the Boardwalk Empire-ification of the Resorts Casino. If they only have the sexy flapper types, they’re only showing one distorted aspect of the show, and they’ve got nobody to help solve their problems with angry drunks and card-sharks.
