Ed O’Bannon, whose lawsuit over the use of his likeness in
an NCAA Basketball video game sought to bring fairness to student athletes, may
have won his first lawsuit, but it ain’t over yet. That’s because, to squeeze
more money out of video games, the NCAA has used O’Bannon’s likeness again in their
thrilling new NCAA Lawsuit video game.
In the new video game, players can play as their favorite NCAA athletes
suing the NCAA, as NCAA lawyers fighting the suits, or as NCAA executives who
cash in on student athletes’ likenesses without sharing the proceeds with the
athletes whose images are used. It’s a thrilling game of strategy and combat,
much like a sports game. And like an NCAA sports video game, they aren’t
planning on compensating athletes for their likenesses.
Well, O’Bannon may have won his case over the sports video
game issue, but can he win the new suit over the NCAA Lawsuit video game? I guess only
time will tell.
