This ad’s message is really quite good: people (especially celebrities) who post photos of themselves smoking cigarettes are serving as free ad spokespeople for Big Tobacco. The problem is, the ad is all snazzy and has lots of photos of attractive people looking cool while smoking, so this ad serves as an ad for Big Tobacco too, despite its anti-tobacco message.
Good idea: unintended outcome.
Maybe that’s the whole point, to show people that’s what they’re doing when they post smoking selfies. But then they’re just coming right out and admitting smoking looks cool by demonstrating it, and I thought they were trying to undermine the idea of smoking being cool. Plus, they’re helping the offending smoking selfies get out to a much larger audience who might never have seen them.
So maybe back to the old drawing board?
(Another possible problem here is that their hashtag, as one word, says: “shit” at the end.)
