In this TV spot for the Subaru Legacy, a father offers his
young son, playing in a toy electric car, the keys to his Suburu, and the kid
gets stuck in traffic, gets a ticket, etc., after which we cut back to the kid
in the toy electric car, and he tells his father: “You know what, Dad? I’m good.”
Wow, this commercial really shows us what a drag it can be
to own and drive a car. Hmm, maybe we should take a hint from the ad and not
buy a car, especially not a Suburu, since this stuff apparently happens more in
Suburus, according to their own ad.
You know, it’s really nice of Suburu to warn us away from
their product like this when they know it will bring us nothing but misery.
That’s more honesty than we’ve come to expect from car companies.
I mean, this ad is cute and fun and all, but it does show a
little boy, the kind of person that would typically give anything to be allowed
to drive a real car, having a miserable experience driving the car they’re
selling, so much so, that he doesn’t even want to drive this car at all. And
that speaks volumes to me, although probably not the kind of message they were
hoping to send.
Maybe the new slogan should be: “Subaru: Not even little
boys want to drive one!”
Here’s the cute car commercial:
