Carrots & Sticks for Syria

Someone on the news today was talking about carrots and sticks with this proposed deal to remove Syria’s chemical weapons. And political analysts say this is an example of using carrots & sticks, with the stick being the threat of an American military strike. But what’s the carrot? Analysts and our officials are saying this deal might not work out and could be a delay tactic or some sneaky trick. And if it is, I think it’s due to the carrot.

How do we know Bashar al-Assad likes carrots? Why don’t we offer him a candy bar, or some New York City pizza (or, okay, since President Obama is from Chicago, then how about a deep-dish Chicago-style pizza)? Is this that healthy food initiative requiring us to offer only healthy vegetable selections to our adversaries? If this thing falls through, many people may die just because of this healthy food initiative! Talk about the catastrophic unintended consequences of well-intentioned government policy!

Can’t we offer people yummy food if lives are at stake? Or would the healthy food advocates claim the lives we save will be a miserable experience full of obesity and diabetes, and they’d be better off dead anyway? Oh, the humanity!
