Minority Report: The Movie Title

Minority Repority (As my friends always call it) is on TCM tonight, and it strikes me that its title seems kind of misleading. The word ‘minority’ is generally understood to mean something completely different than what the word actually means these days (as in it generally refers to political demographic groups nowadays), so much so as to be confusing and distracting when it means what it does here. So I thought it might make more sense if the name of this movie were more specifically tied to what the movie is about. And since this movie is about predicting who is going to commit murder, I thought it might make more sense to call it: Who Was Going To Done It (from the genre of the “Who done it?”), or more specifically: He Was Going To Did It (But Not Really), since the movie is really just another hero-detective-accused-of-a-crime-he-didn’t-commit-and-so-now-he-has-to-prove-his-innocence plot. And it’s a shame that this is what the plot is, because it really could have been a great movie if it didn’t have such a generic, formula plot. (Although admittedly this plot is used well as a frame to hang a lot of futuristic social commentary stuff.) Oh well; to get the movie made, I guess they’ve got to sell the project to the money guys based upon a plot they can easily understand.
