Wow, Jeeps are being built for free? Hey, great! So then we
can get them for extra cheap, right?
But hey… What are they doing to their workers that they are
willing to build Jeeps for free? Are they threatening their workers’ families? Are
the workers held prisoner? What’s going on here, and where are the unions in
all of this? I thought they were supposed to protect workers!
Oh, wait a minute: they mean they are built by people who
are free, as in freedom, don’t they? Well, maybe they ought to make that clear
in their slogan, like maybe: “Jeep: Freedom Built”, or “Jeep: Building Freedom”.
And actually, I like the second one better, because it suggests that Jeeps are
not only the incarnation of freedom, but they also help us build our own
freedom as well, which makes sense, because as a four-wheel-drive car, we can
escape to build our own freedom in a
Jeep! (And that is the whole message of the ad I’m referencing. And for this
ad, “Building Freedom” would have worked better as the slogan, I think.)
Here’s the truly great ad with the message: “Throw yourself at
the world head-first” (and with the extremely ironic disclaimer: “Do Not
Attempt”):
(I know everybody thinks they have to top the Apple “Think
Different” slogan, but as I have pointed out before, it’s not so easy to pull
off.)
