Chuck Hagel said today, of the North Korean threat: “It only
takes, uh, being wrong once. And I don’t want to be the Secretary of Defense
who was wrong once.”
Well, I’m here to reassure you, Secretary of Defense Hagel:
Don’t worry, you probably will not be wrong once. I’m sure you’ll be the
Secretary of Defense who is wrong lots of times. But even so, you will still
have a much better record than many of your predecessors. So count your
blessings, and remember: no matter how many times you’re wrong, there’s always
Donald Rumsfeld, and next to him, and the Vietman guys, you’ll come out
smelling like a rose, even if it’s a burnt, smoldering, radioactive rose.
(Well, actually, maybe in that case you’d be worse. But that’s really a
worst-case scenario, and most of us wouldn’t be around to notice anyway, so no
worries.)
