I just saw a California Lotto ad on PBS that uses the great
‘60s song “California Dreaming” by the Mamas and the Papas. (Wow, they must be
hurting at PBS to accept a lottery ad!)
But this commercial shows a bunch of people enjoying themselves as it rains
those Lotto balls from the sky, like it’s raining ping pong balls or something. (Actually, it is ping pong balls, because there are clearly no numbers on them. Maybe they should have numbers on them so it makes more sense?) And that made me wonder if it might be more appropriate to use a different song
as the soundtrack here, like perhaps “It’s Raining Balls”, which would be a
slightly reworked version of the song “It’s Raining Men”, but singing “balls”
instead of “men”. Because that is what we’re seeing happen in this ad, after
all.
