CNN and War (And Spree Killings)

CNN is trying to get America involved militarily in Syria. They’ve been trying to get us into the Syrian Civil War for months now, actually. But a big contradiction has presented itself here with the 10-year anniversary of the start of the Iraq War, and CNN’s role in that fiasco. In CNN’s coverage of this anniversary, they condemn the Iraq War (and rightly so), but if you remember back ten years, CNN was beating the drum for war with Iraq, and basically selling the war to the American public, like practically every other news station in the country. Then they showed all the big neato explosions and all the sensationalistic gore of wounded war casualties, etc. But when it all started to go wrong, they condemned this war they helped sell, never really addressing the fact that they really pushed for it and devoted so much coverage to it. (Kind of odd, don’t you think? {Maybe they thought it would be great for their network like the first Gulf War? That war made Wolf Blitzer a star!})

So now we see CNN beating the drum for American involvement in another messy war in the Middle East. Which begs the question: Are they trying to get America into another disastrous Middle East war so that they can get all the sensational coverage that will boost their ratings, and then they can condemn the war and be all sanctimonious about the human toll? Because that’s what they did with the Iraq War. And it’s funny to see them pointing fingers of blame for that, but never finding one to point at themselves. (Kind of like with the spree shootings: their wall-to-wall coverage of spree shootings is without a doubt one of the biggest inspiration factors for causing more of them, because it’s an easy way for a loser who feels powerless to become an instant celebrity overnight with a well-publicized revenge fantasy massacre. But when asked if they contribute to the problem, they generally dismiss their role out-of-hand, just like a real enabler. Talk about denial and hypocrisy.)
