A banner ad for BP over the online coverage of the Sochi Olympic Games says: “This winter at Sochi, muscles will burn.” They should have added: “Like all the oil and gas from BP that burns, releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.”
Of course I’m kidding, but I’ll bet I am not the only person to have this thought occur from seeing this ad, and I think maybe it’s a better idea not to invite people to think negative thoughts about your company via your advertising. (This is what’s known as an “unforced error”, which is, appropriately, a sports term.)
Maybe next they can have a banner ad that says: “This winter at Sochi, tears of joy will spill, like oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico from a BP oil rig.”
