This spot begins in a cute way, showing some guy being
welcomed into a gas station mini mart as the theme from the TV show Cheers plays, and they all know his
name, presumably because he comes in to get gas all the time. Or maybe it’s
because he doesn’t know how to use the card machine at the pump. Or maybe he
had his identity stolen by using his card at the pump, so now he goes inside.
Or something. Or maybe he’s just a nice, likable guy, so everyone likes him.
Oh, but just when this seemed nice and friendly, some
buzzkill comes in and breaks the mood, because nobody knows his name. And then
we find out that it might not be because he’s a jerk, but because he drives a
diesel car. And I guess this gas station doesn’t sell diesel, and where he has
to go to get diesel fuel doesn’t have a mini mart, so he has to make two
stops, and this annoys him to the point where he isn’t very well liked. Or
something.
You know, this idea is pretty good for an electric car, but
like when we saw the “gas station break-up” ad last year, this is just another car
that still needs to fill up on gas or diesel, so the message is kind of
misleading. And yes, they claim it gets really good mileage, but we all know
those ratings are exaggerated, and this guy will likely have to drive farther
than most people to find fuel to put in his car, and that may wipe out
the extra range, as well as kill more of his time.
Here’s the cheery spot:
