Sprint Motorola XPRT Angry Birds Ad

This spot, which everyone must have seen by now, basically says that the phone makes things easier and more efficient, so we can all go back to playing Angry Birds. Um, this is cute and all, but it’s a seriously sad commentary on our society today that when the work is completed, we’d all prefer to play a stupid video game, rather than spend time with our families or find meaningful relationships or activities. Are we really all so vapid nowadays? Sometimes it seems like it.

There has been a lot of talk lately about how our tech devices have killed a lot of our social interaction, and that this stuff, which is intended to make it easier to connect with other people, is in fact dividing and isolating us from society. So it’s particularly disturbing, albeit in an admittedly cute and fun way, that this ad would take such a tack as to suggest that our lives are so empty and meaningless, the only thing left for us to do when we’re done with the drudgery of the daily grind is to play Angry Birds. (Or that it’s so addictive of a game, we’re all being forced to play it, rather than enjoying substantive experiences in our lives.) And boy, when that flash-in-the-pan fad ends, we’re all going to be very depressed about all the time we wasted on it, and how obese we all are since we never get any exercise anymore.

Well that was kinda depressing, huh? Sorry about that, but that’s what it makes me think of, and that’s how it makes me feel when I see it. But it is cute: I’ll give it that much. (But I have to ask myself: Does Sprint own stock in the Angry Birds video game company? They’re sure touting it enough!)

Here’s the ad:

BTW: If you want to see an ad for a phone that uses the Angry Birds theme right, and will cheer you up, check this commercial out:

Now that’s great! But it’s not an American ad, as it’s not even in English or Spanish.
