In this spot for the Chevy Silverado, we have Santa Claus
working as a salesman at a Chevrolet dealership, showing a red Silverado to a
prospective customer, and as Santa Claus tells him how many horsepower it has,
the customer snarkily replies: “What’s that in reindeer power? Ha ha ha ha!” So
then Santa takes out a little notepad and writes something down, presumably
putting this guy on his “naughty” list.
So, are we to assume from this that Santa Claus cannot take
a joke? Surely we’re each allowed at least one lame joke per year, right? Or is
Chevrolet simply attempting to make Santa Claus look like an intolerant, easily
offended, nit-picky reactionary? Well, shame on them, unless…
You don’t suppose that the economy is so bad that even
Santa Claus is having to work a seasonal sales job just to make ends meet, do
you? Actually, if that’s not the case, then isn’t Chevrolet forcing Santa to
work for them against his will, when he really ought to be making and delivering
toys to all the good little boys and girls of the world? Shame on those guys!
No wonder Santa is feeling a bit sensitive and annoyed: they’re holding him as
a wage slave, if they’re even paying him at all! Unless…
Hey, you don’t suppose they’ve got some guy working for
their dealerships who is pretending to
be Santa Claus, do you? That’s fraud! And hey: if they really do have Santa Claus working there by choice, then
shouldn’t all the trucks be free for Christmas? I say that unless we all get
free Chevy Silverados for Christmas (assuming we’ve been good this year), then
this is false advertising!
Here’s the Christmasy Chevy Commercial:
