Michele Bachmann, An American Girl

That’s right: Tom Petty has reportedly asked Michele Bachmann to stop using his song: “An American Girl” for her campaign stuff.

Why do Republicans always do this? They know liberal musicians are always going to object to their songs being used as Republican propaganda, so why do they still do it? Is it because they want everyone to see these musicians saying: “Hey, man; you can’t use my brilliant art for your nefarious purposes, man!”, and then they get to play the victim card? Because, technically, you’re supposed to get permission before you use any published song for any purpose: as a lawyer, she ought to know that. So it’s just dumb not to get permission in the first place. And to avoid embarrassment, Republican candidates should either exclusively use country music (except for the Dixie Chicks, obviously), or have new music written especially for their candidacies.

But I suppose they always say: “No publicity is bad publicity”, especially in this tabloid culture of ours. In fact, perhaps she’ll generate a lot more buzz for her candidacy if she tracks Tom Petty down and brains him with an umbrella or her purse: that way, she’d make the front page and be the leading story on all of the news outlets, whether newspaper, television, or the internet! That’s what I’d do, but then again, I wouldn’t have used his song without permission to begin with, because that’s just rude. Oh, and it’s also technically illegal and dumb to boot. And Bachmann already has that incorrect-fact and bad-memory issue to contend with, so she doesn’t need anything else to make her seem dumb.

But it’s just a suggestion… (There: am I technically a "political strategist" now?)
