American Debt Forgiveness?

We keep hearing over and over again about the bleak future of our economy, and how high America’s debt is, and that’s why we can’t do any of the things we need to do as a country. But we really owe most of the debt to The Fed, and that’s really part of the government. So, the government owes the government most of our debt? Then how about having The Fed forgive America’s debt?

This sounds like a joke, but it’s really not. Poor countries have their debts forgiven all the time, and when you calculate our GDP vs. our debt, America is one of the poorest countries in the world! So forgive our debt! And this will help everyone, so they’d be unlikely to complain if they knew how it might affect them not to allow this. After all, we could hardly keep up with the foreign aid if we go broke, right? And the disaster relief, and the medical aid, etc., would dry up as well.

So maybe we need to stay solvent, and since we really only owe the money to ourselves, why not say: “forget it”? Then we can spend like drunken sailors again! (Except that we never stopped, but whatever.)
