I Dream of Evgenie

If there is a goddess of rhythmic gymnastics on Mount Olympus, surely her name must be Evgenia Kanaeva. She came to London and did what no-one else has ever done before: defended her Olympic gold medal in the individual all-around. She's also won just about everything else there is to win in her sport.* She's like the Michael Phelps of rhythmic gymnastics, only, you know, sparklier and stuff.

So, what's next for our superhuman heroine of Olympic fame? Will she star in ads? Like, an announcer could sound like an umpire shouting: "Play ball!", and they could have her playing with the ball apparatus, and the announcer could say: "No, not that kind of ball: baseball!" And that could be the teaser ad for the new MLB season opener.

Or how about this? They could show her working with the clubs apparatus, and the announcer could say: "Some clubs are very difficult." Then they could show her getting the Olympic gold medal and have the announcer say: "And some clubs are extremely exclusive and a lot of work to get into." And then they could show someone getting their new supermarket savings card, and have the announcer say: "But a club doesn't have to be hard to get into to be valuable: with the (whatever supermarket) club card, just come on in and get yours, and it will save you lots of money on special deals throughout our store!"

These are just some silly ideas of what we might expect to see here in America if she was an American. But in Russia, I imagine she must do lots of ads, or whatever superstars do in Russia when they reach the tippity-top of their field. I remember after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I thought a jeans company should have hired Nastia Liukin and Evgenia Kanaeva as their models (as the reigning queens of their respective gymnastics: especially since Nastia was born in Russia), and used the campaign in America, Russia, and throughout Europe. (It might have even done something to help popularize the sport of rhythmic gymnastics in America.) But unless she's too busy to do it, Russian clothiers are crazy if they don't try to get her to model for them! (She's like Michael Jordan in Russia!)

* Seriously: Just look at her medal record!:
